Nervous System Overload and Sensory Sensitivity

The nervous system is continuously processing information.

This includes:

sound

light

emotional input

social interaction

physical sensation

stress-related signals

environmental stimulation

At times, the system may become overloaded by cumulative input.

When this happens, even ordinary levels of stimulation may begin to feel difficult to process.

Signs of Overload

Nervous-system overload may present differently for each individual.

Some people describe:

increased irritability

difficulty concentrating

heightened emotional reactivity

tension or fatigue

disrupted sleep

difficulty unwinding

sensitivity to sound, light, or environments

feeling emotionally or physically depleted

These experiences are not always the result of a single event.

Often, they develop gradually over time.

Supporting the System Gently

For highly activated or sensitive systems, support may be more effective when approached gradually.

This can include:

pacing

reduced overstimulation

nervous-system regulation practices

body awareness

rest and recovery support

gentle frequency-based approaches

The aim is not to eliminate sensitivity, but to support greater steadiness and resilience over time.

Within The Quiet Body Care

Within this work, sensitivity is approached respectfully rather than as something to override.

Sessions are designed to support nervous-system settling, regulation, and gradual integration without unnecessary intensity.
